An intimate Whisky tasting experience

We were invited to attend an intimate whisky tasting for our very own “Bains Whisky” at the beautiful Whisky Bro Bar at the Morningside Shopping centre with not more than 10invited guests ready to enjoy what Bain’s had to offer.

We were welcomed with the signature Bain’s whisky cocktail “The Leopard & Lime” which was a refreshing cocktail that got us ready to set the mood. Then it was time to be seated and taken on a real journey with Bain’s Whisky.


We were hosted by  “The Whisky Maker” as he is known, Master Distiller Andy Watts who took us on a journey not many South Africans know about the South African Whisky Bain’s, from how it is made and goes through the wood aging process and that unlike other Whisky’s Bain’s is made only from grain, water & yeast. The Whisky starts off as a spirit, clear in color and quite clean, it then moves to the next stage where it can now be called a Whisky and of course they could have easily sold it like that but it’s only sat for 3 years in the barrels, stage 3 is where the magic starts to come alive and the Whisky now has a distinct smell, it is darker in color and you can finally taste the vanilla notes coming through. What finally creates the magic, is the last process of taking the Whisky back into the Barrels for an additional 3 years and voila, you have Bain’s. The vanilla notes are stronger, it has a creamy nose to it (so when you smell it before you sip it, it’s way more creamier) and you can now taste other spices coming through.

We started our mouth-watering journey with a creamy roasted butternut soup.Processed with VSCO with a6 presetWe then moved to something meaty with her amazing slow roasted pork belly, sweet corn crème, chipotle dust and fennel and pomegranate…are you drooling yet?

Dessert was packaged as a cute take away filled with dark chocolate clusters, salted caramel pecan pie and a white chocolate milk tart fudge.

Our mouths really took a journey with Bain’s and who knew that having some Whisky and food would be such a great treat. The moral of the experience is that, yes ladies we can also enjoy our Whisky with just some water and ice.

Fun Facts about Bain’s Whisky

  • South African produced Whisky is spelt without the “e” so that’s how you know it’s South African
  • It was awarded the Worlds Best Grain Whisky at the 2018 World Whisky Awards
